The Velocity Factor

Cheetah running into the wild

Indoor marijuana gardeningI wanna share something with you that has been a key factor in my own success, and can help you not only to be more productive in your growing adventures, but also in your life.

I call it the “Velocity Factor”

Imagine green sugary buds. Beautiful, big, fat sticky ones. As many of them as you want to grow.

That’s what I did 31 years ago.

And then I got busy.

Did I make a plan? Sure. But planning doesn’t attract success. Speed and execution attract success.

No amount of studying, planning, brainstorming, or mentally preparing even come close to the power of just getting to damn work.

A running cheetah in the wild. I’ve known people with all kinds of amazing plans to harvest tens, hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of bright green beauties; or to start their dream business or launch a product line, and their plans are amazing… I mean they’re as prepared as one could be, but the problem is they don’t actually jump in and do it.

They let fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, waiting for inspiration or the “right time” to get started, keeping them stuck in a state of perpetual “gonna do something great” but they never go out and do it.

“I wish to have no connection to a ship which does not sail fast; for I intend to go into harm’s way.”

– John Paul Jones

The key is to dive in headfirst and let the path reveal itself to you.

Action not only alleviates anxiety, but it attracts the answers, tools and momentum you need to be successful.

No book, plan, thought, meeting, insight, partner, blog or forum post can give it to you.  It takes massive action in the direction of what you want.

Sure, study your ass off and make well calculated plans, but all the best information and planning in the world is completely useless without execution.

A moment of NASCAR crashAnd the faster you execute, the more success you’ll attract.

Yes, you’ll also make more mistakes, I spoke about this in-depth my last post actually—How to Become an Epic Grower—but mistakes are good. They’re a necessary component of success.

Be willing to make a mess, break some stuff, spill nutes, kill plants and maybe even get some blood on the floor.

That’s ok, The path is never perfect. It’s dynamic, changing and sometimes a downright pain in the ass.

But if you move fast and fail fast, you’ll also learn fast and attract success fast.

So don’t worry about trying to do everything perfect, especially if you’re just starting out.

In fact, perfectionism is your worst enemy if you want to succeed. It’s a form of fear and control. You have to be willing to embrace the chaos and face it head on.

“If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.”
― Bruce Lee

An artistic image with two racing carsThe more successful you become as a grower, in business or at ANYTHING in life, the more chaos, hurdles, and setbacks you’re gonna face.

But it’s all one big test. Success is testing you to see if you have what it takes. To achieve what you want in life, you have to become a person who achieves the kinds of things you set out to do. You have to grow, evolve and prove you can handle yourself under the pressure.

If you currently grow 10 plants and want to grow 10,000, you have become a person who can handle growing 10,000 plants. And to become that person, there will be series of tests every step of the way.

As you pass the tests, you become stronger, wiser, more tenacious and more successful.

However, none of this happens when we sit on our ass. It happens when we get moving, Even if we don’t know where to start, the key is to start. And then once you get moving, opportunities, possibilities and rewards will open themselves up to you.

My entire life as a grower I lived by the principle of velocity.

And yeah, I’ve made mistakes, crashed, burned, blew shit up… the whole deal.

But velocity has allowed me to achieve things that there’s no way I ever could have done had I tried to come up with the perfect plan or waited for inspiration to come give me a swift kick in the butt.

I had to get busy.

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”
― Stephen King, On Writing

A running athlete finish off the trackAs long as you can see the first step, take it. You’re never going to figure out all the steps you need to take to get to where you want to go. The first step will lead to the second step and so on.

When I first started the Advanced Nutrients Holiday Heroes Program—to feed hungry families in Bulgaria—from the time of conception until we fed our first 1000 families was just 21 days.

People said it would be impossible. I guess they didn’t understand the power of velocity.

And yeah, we ran into ALL SORTS of problems that we didn’t foresee. But we never would have been able to figure everything out just sitting around waiting for the perfect plan to come together. We got busy and learned as we went.

And before long we were able to feed not only 1,000 families at a time, but 16,000 people at a time.

Just like anything else worthwhile I’ve accomplished in my life, it’s because I started with a goal, got busy taking action in the direction of that goal, encountered all kinds of problems, learned, grew and sometimes had to adjust my course a bit, and finally either reached my destination or one better than I had originally set out to reach.

A biker wins the raceJust like Tyler Durdin said in Fight Club “I don’t want to die without any scars

Whatever it is you want to achieve in life—giant gardens with big fat sugar-coated buds, owning a business, getting into shape, going after your dream life or career, if you just start moving in the direction of it—not tip-toeing around, but taking large and bold strides—the path will reveal itself to you, and you’ll either achieve your goals, or something greater.

And I want great things for you.

“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark would burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”

How Something Great Came Out of The Time I Was Kidnapped

Man with handcuffs

A tied man to a chairSometimes in life we need to be broken down before we can get to the next level.

The following is a true story.

Early morning, British Columbia, 2005

Just like I did every morning, I was spending quality time with my daughter—eating breakfast, playing, having meaningful conversations in toddler gibberish, and reading storybooks to her.

All of a sudden, I hear loud voices from outside yelling, “Michael Straumietis, get out here! Come out here right now, Michael!”

I peek out the window and see Canadian Royal Mounted Police Officers standing out the front gate of my property.

Shit.

I open the front door and ask, “Yeah, what’s up?”

A kneeling man held by nomad peopleThey immediately handcuff me, toss me in the back of their car, and tell me that they’re taking me to the border.

You see, four years earlier—in 2001—I was charged with growing marijuana.

The Canadian Government had frozen my bank accounts, seized over $1 million in assets, confiscated both business and personal records, and completely disrupted both my own finances, and the finances of Advanced Nutrients.

But since they had no case, the charges were stayed and my property was returned. In fact, to date it’s the largest forfeiture return in Canadian history.

And because of this, the feds were so pissed they actually decided to kick me out of the country.

HandcuffsSo here I am, being thrown into the back of a cop car and taken out of the country completely against my will. I don’t know what you call it when you’re dragged away from your child, forced into a car, and taken away from your home and loved ones—with no arrest warrant mind you—but I call it kidnapping.

Fortunately, my housekeeper was home so she could stay with my daughter for the time being until her mother got home.

I tell the officers that they can’t just take me out of the country, because I have a young Canadian daughter to care for, that taking me out of the country could be detrimental to her welfare, and that the law states that they have to put the best interest of the Canadian child first. I ask them to please take me to a judge so we can get this all straightened out.

“Mr. Straumieits, we’re not going to be taking you to a judge, we’re taking you to the border.”

And that’s exactly what they did.

When we get to the border, the two officers pause for a moment and look at each other, just like Thelma and Louise did before driving over the cliff.

One cop says to the other, “Should we really do this?”

The other officer just sits there for a moment—knowing that what they’re doing is wrong—and says, “Yeah, we have to.”

I’m taken over the border into the United States and handed over to U.S. border agents—separated from my family, my home, my friends, and my business.

This REALLY bummed me out at first. But if I know anything, it’s that feeling sorry for oneself leads nowhere.

I saw two roads. One where this destroys me, and one where I use the situation as rocket fuel for bigger and better things.

A move scene from Rocky 3I became determined to turn this around into something good—to make life better than ever.

And that’s exactly what I did.

I moved my family to Washington for a few months and then to sunny Southern California.

I doubled-up my efforts, learned everything I could about business, marketing, and making an impact on the world and I networked like never before.

I began working harder, longer, and smarter. I devoured books and courses like sumo wrestlers devour sushi. I resolved that I would use this experience—along with every seemingly negative thing that had ever happened to me in my life—to help others.

Sure, there were still lots of obstacles in my way, challenges to overcome, and dark nights to walk through, but once you get it in your gut that you’re going to do something and that nothing is going to stand in your way, life lines up to help you make it happen.

Look, we all go through our fair share of stuff. None of us are immune. And the more great things you set out to do, the more tests and trials will be thrown at you.

Shelfs with advanced nutrients productsIn the following years I took Advanced Nutrients from a $5 million a year company to an over $100 million a year company.

I started a charity program called Holiday Heroes that feeds thousands of hungry families each year.

I began a movement in Bulgaria called Political Change Now which has actually  grown into a major political party called New Bulgaria.

New Bulgaria is working hard to root out corruption from within the Bulgarian Judicial System, turn around the economy, and help the impoverished citizens of Bulgaria live the kind of life they truly deserve to live—a life where every Bulgarian stands equal in the eyes of the law, and can be prosperous, thrive, and follow their dreams.

I lost over 60 pounds of fat and committed myself to making health and fitness a priority in my life.

And now I share my experiences on this blog with people just like you, who can learn from the challenges, setbacks, and victories from my life.

Very green big BUDSI honestly believe that being kidnapped by the Canadian Royal Mounted Police and thrown out of Canada is one of the best things that ever happened to me—it’s what helped catapult me into the life I have today.

No matter what you’re going through, you CAN turn it around if just decide to, and get busy working to create change.

Napoleon Hill once said “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”

If you can live your life with this in mind, and look for at least some aspect of good in everything you see and experience, life will reward you in GIANT ways.

And often the biggest gifts come from our biggest challenges.

What you go through makes you stronger, wiser, and more understanding…IF you become determined that it will. The other option is to live an unfulfilled life of fear, suffering, and regret, which in my mind is no option at all.

Just like a muscle needs to be broken down before it can become stronger, sometimes we need to be broken down before we can become stronger as well.

A man rising his hands after workoutThe happiest, coolest, and most successful people I know—the ones who live the most awesome lives—are almost always the ones who went through the most stuff to get where they are today.

Like Bruce Lee said, “Do not pray for an easy life but pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”

My sincere wish for you is that you take your struggles, losses, and challenges and turn them into gold—mentally, emotionally, psychically, spiritually, and financially.

And if this blog post helps you do this even a little bit, then I’ve served my purpose today.

I’d love to hear your comments below

BigMike 🙂

Why You Don’t Wanna Be a One-Man Wolfpack…and How to Connect With the Right Growers

Man with beard and sun glasses

A close-up portrait of a man with beard - one man wolfpackHey there, I hope you’re doing awesome and are ready to kick some serious ass in 2014. I know I sure am.

Because what we do as growers isn’t always accepted by the masses (they ARE coming around though), we often end up being far too self-reliant for our own good.

In fact, being a one-man wolfpack is one of the biggest things that holds a ton of great growers back from producing at the level they want to.

Yes, YOU are the one— the ONLY one—who is responsible for your success as a grower.

YOU are the one who needs to have the vision.

YOU are the one who needs to decide that nothing is going to stop you from reaching that vision.

And YOU are the one who needs to put one foot in front of the other, trudge through the self-doubt and limiting beliefs, conquer your inner demons, overcome whatever obstacles you may face, and move forward with unrelenting strides to make your vision a reality.

However…you can’t do it alone.

You need others to help show you the way…others who you can bounce ideas off of…others who support you and your dreams, and whom you support as well.

Three man and a baby in elevatorBack when I first started growing 31 years ago, before there were blogs like this one and online magazines like Big Buds, and when there was very little valid literature on the subject of growing marijuana, we had no choice but to rely on each other so we could figure all this stuff out.

I’d share with my friends what was working for me, and they would share with me what was working for them.

We supported each other every step of the way as we revolutionized the way marijuana is grown. In fact, we still do.

Too many growers let their paranoia and genuine mistrust of others isolate and hold them back.

You need quality members of our community whom you can turn to and count on to be there for you.

Sure, today there are forums that can be super helpful, especially if you can see past the trolls and haters. But it’s just not the same as having a group of close friends who lift each other up.

If you do have a tight-knit network like this, you are blessed.

Here are two things I’ve done over the years that have been critical in my success as a grower, in business and in life that I think can have a profound impact on your life as well…

An image of Obi Uan Kenobi from the movie Star Wars1. Mentors.

I find people who have done the kinds of things I want to do, and then get guidance from them.

I’ve had coaches and mentors ever since I started growing in the early 80’s, and if it were not for them, I never would have been able to achieve the things I have in my life.

Now, oftentimes I may be more successful than the person I’m learning from, but they’ll know a certain subject inside and out that I want to become more proficient at… So I look to them for guidance.

Never underestimate the power of working with mentors.

I strongly suggest finding guides who can help point the way along your journey. They can save you years of frustration and costly mistakes and help shorten those learning curves that we all need to go through.

Silouetes of group of man2. Mastermind.

A mastermind group is a group of like-minded individuals who meet either in person or virtually, to brainstorm, educate each other, keep each other accountable, and support each other.

You basically help each other succeed.

Members of the group set individual goals and then the group supports each other in accomplishing these goals.

I highly recommend involving yourself in a mastermind group.

And if you can’t find one, start one. It can be a network of growers, or just a bunch of cool success-oriented people who can help you make your vision a reality.

Some of my closest friends today come from the mastermind groups I’ve been involved with over the years.

Without each other, without members of our community pulling together and having one another’s backs, true success will always be a far off pipe-dream.

Whether in the official setting of a mastermind group, or even if it’s just a bunch of comrades helping each other out, it’s important to surround yourself with people who have common values, are success oriented, and WANT to see you succeed.

Life is too short to be around crabs who want to pull you down, know-it-alls who want to break your balls in a forum just because you don’t know as much as they do or have a different opinion on things, and time vampires who want to suck you dry.

Stick with the ones who are authentic and will tell you the real deal, who are willing to teach you anything they know, and who will bail your ass out of jail if needed (and who you’ll do the same for.)

However, realize that the people you attract in your life are basically mirror images of you or aspects of your personality.

So if you’re around a bunch of negative people, untrustworthy shenanigan artists, or undesirables, then there are parts of yourself you may want to address, because there’s a reason these people are in your life. Remember, like attracts like.

BE what and who you want to attract into your life.

Start friendships off with the giving hand and by being a friend first. If you want someone to help you, help them first. Reciprocity is a powerful thing.

Have you ever heard of the Deathsquad Network?

a panoramic small image of deathsquad network

The Deathsquad Network is of group comedians (along with a few MMA fighters) who support the living shit out of each other.

They’re a great example of what I’m talking about in this blog post. True friends helping each other succeed.

Deathsquad includes Joe Rogan, Brian Redban, Doug Benson, Joey CoCo Diaz, Tom Segura, Eddie Bravo, Bryan Callen, Tait Fletcher, Doug Stanhope, Duncan Trussell, Greg Fitzsimmons, Bert Kreisher and Ari Shaffir.

These dudes have created an awesome little community for themselves.

A colage of cartoon faces By the way, if you haven’t listened to Joe Rogan’s podcast, do yourself a huge favor and check it out.

It gets into higher consciousness, marijuana, legalization, psychedelics, positive thinking, community, health and fitness, friendship, stand-up comedy, MMA, politics, activism and tons of other cool stuff.

As a member of the Underground, it’s right up you alley.

The camaraderie between the regulars on the show shines through in each episode and it’s a great example of members of a community lifting each other up while talking about cool topics and it’s all done in a funny and entertaining way.

Who you choose to surround yourself with can make or break who you are and who you want to become.

In fact, if it weren’t for others, I’d probably have given up on growing a long time ago.

It’s been said that you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. In my experience, this is as true as it gets.

Surround yourself with the right people.

Without having good people in your life, true success is not only impossible, but it wouldn’t even be worth achieving anyway.

And if you want to make better connections with people, read Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People

It’s classic that has changed the lives of millions.

Here’s another example of people pulling together…

In Bulgaria, businesses are taxed if they donate food to a cause.

And because of this twisted law, each year Bulgarian businesses throw away 145,000 tons of food, while 800,000 Bulgarians are starving.

We’re talking about 800,000 people who would not need to starve if they could just have access to this food.

A crowd of people in a charity hallSo recently, The Advanced Nutrients Holiday Heroes Army launched an initiative that’s bringing together Bulgarian businesses, experts and the government to deal with the unjust tax laws that are causing the people so much undue suffering.

AND we’re feeding 5,000 families this Christmas by getting some major businesses to ally forces and make sure these families get fed.

If I tried to feed all these hungry families myself it would never happen.

But because of people and businesses coming together—something that has NEVER happened before in Bulgaria—we’re able to put great food onto the tables of so many deserving families.

And ya know what?

None of this would be possible without YOU.

It’s our community that is making it possible for me to do all this.

Without you feeding your plants with Advanced Nutrients, I would not be able to be here in Bulgaria with the Holiday Heroes Army working to create change, getting impoverished people to believe in themselves, and feeding families who so desperately need it.

So I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Because of you, I’ve been able to get some major players, like Sony, involved in our charity program—allowing us to make positive things happen at a rapid pace.

Check out this short talk I gave, thanking Sony for participating in the Holiday Heroes Program this month.

Sony fed 500 families which is downright awesome, and I’m highly grateful to them for it.

Check it out and see where your dollars are going when you invest in Advanced Nutrients. I’m not really a suit guy, and when I wear one it always reminds me of being 9 years old and my mom making me dress up for someone’s wedding or something…but what the hell, it’s for a good cause:

Cannabis Varietals, Spanish Culture and International Politics with “Big” Mike Straumietis

BigMike gives us a close up look at a few types of Spanish cannabis that’s he’s already had, and then we watch him roll one that he’s never tried before.

He sings praises to the Spanish for the immense care they take when preparing their cannabis and shows great admiration for the length of time they take in drying their product. Apparently they actually pump humidity into the drying room to slow down the process.

He and Remo discuss the politics surrounding the hydroponics industry in Spain and talk about how the Spanish culture may effect the way we view and approach hydroponics here in the states.
